Protection of Property

22 ^[a]“Whoever steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it must pay back^(A) five head of cattle for the ox and four sheep for the sheep.

⁴ If the stolen animal is found alive in their possession^(A)—whether ox or donkey or sheep—they must pay back double.^(B)

⁷ “If anyone gives a neighbor silver or goods for safekeeping^(A) and they are stolen from the neighbor’s house, the thief, if caught, must pay back double.^{(B) 8} But if the thief is not found, the owner of the house must appear before the judges,^(C) and they must^[a] determine whether the owner of the house has laid hands on the other person’s property. ⁹ In all cases of illegal possession of an ox, a donkey, a sheep, a garment, or any other lost property about which somebody says, ‘This is mine,’ both parties are to bring their cases before the judges.^[b](D) The one whom the judges declare^[c] guilty must pay back double to the other.

¹⁵ “When anyone is unfaithful to the Lord by sinning unintentionally^(A) in regard to any of the Lord’s holy things, they are to bring to the Lord as a penalty^(B) a ram^(C) from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value in silver, according to the sanctuary shekel.^[a](D) It is a guilt offering.^(E)

¹⁶ They must make restitution^(A) for what they have failed to do in regard to the holy things, pay an additional penalty of a fifth of its value^(B) and give it all to the priest. The priest will make atonement for them with the ram as a guilt offering, and they will be forgiven.

⁵ or whatever it was they swore falsely about. They must make restitution^(A) in full, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the owner on the day they present their guilt offering.^(B)

⁶ And as a penalty they must bring to the priest, that is, to the Lord, their guilt offering,^(A) a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value.^(B)
